Holland America Line dress code

Holland America uses a Smart Casual baseline for most evenings. In table service restaurants it does not permit shorts, pool or beachwear, distressed jeans, or men's tank tops. On Dressy Nights guests dress up, though the line stresses that black tie and tuxedos have never been required and does not provide formal wear. The specific recommendation for each evening is listed in the Daily Program and the Navigator app.

Formal night frequency

Holland America designates Dressy Nights, the name that replaced Gala Nights, by voyage length: under 4 days none; 4-6 days one; 7-13 days two; 14-20 days three; 21-28 days four, continuing to scale on longer voyages. Most other evenings are Smart Casual. The line uses the term 'Dressy' rather than 'Formal' and states black tie or tuxedos have never been required. Dressy Nights are never scheduled on embarkation day or the final night, and ship staff may adjust their placement.

Beer and spirits are not permitted. Any alcohol other than wine or champagne, whether brought at embarkation or bought in a port, is held for safekeeping and returned on the last day of the voyage.
