EWR to Cape Liberty Cruise Port (2026 Guide)
How to get from Newark (EWR) or JFK airport to Cape Liberty cruise port in Bayonne, NJ in 2026. Transport options, costs, timing, and why EWR is the better.
Cape Liberty Cruise Port sits in Bayonne, NJ, across the harbor from Lower Manhattan. It is the New York metro area’s primary homeport for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises. The port is much easier to reach from Newark (EWR) than from JFK or LaGuardia, and this is the single most important planning decision for your transfer.
If you are flying in for a cruise, here is everything you need to know about getting from EWR to Cape Liberty. If this is your first cruise, read our first-time cruise tips for a smooth embarkation.
Which airport should you fly into?
Newark (EWR) is the right answer. It is about 10 miles (16 km) from Cape Liberty with a drive time of 20 to 35 minutes. JFK is roughly 30 miles (48 km) away and requires crossing from Queens into New Jersey, often through the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel or over the Verrazzano and Bayonne Bridge. That drive can take 45 to 90 minutes. LaGuardia is slightly closer than JFK but still involves crossing into New Jersey through Manhattan traffic. If you have a choice, book EWR.
Transport options from EWR
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): The most common option. EWR’s rideshare pickup is at the designated area on the arrivals level of each terminal. Expect $25 to $45 depending on demand and time of day. The ride takes 20 to 35 minutes via the NJ Turnpike.
Taxi: Taxi service from EWR to Bayonne runs $35 to $50 including tolls. Taxis queue at the ground transportation area of each terminal.
Pre-booked shuttle: Several private services offer transfers from EWR to Cape Liberty. Prices range from $20 to $30 per person for shared shuttles. Book in advance.
Rental car: Cape Liberty offers on-site parking at $35 per day. For a 7-night cruise, that is $245. Oversized vehicles that take more than one space pay double ($70 per day). The parking garage has a 7’4” (2.2 m) height limit. No advance reservation is accepted or required.
Transport options from JFK (if you must)
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Expect $50 to $80 depending on traffic and time of day. The ride takes 45 to 90 minutes. Tolls are included in rideshare fares.
Pre-booked car service: Private car services from JFK to Bayonne run $80 to $120. Book in advance. This is a better option than rideshare for JFK because the fare is predictable.
The cruise terminal
Cape Liberty has a single terminal. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises operate from here. Browse the ship database to compare specs and cabin sizes for ships sailing from Bayonne. The on-site parking garage holds several hundred vehicles. If the main garage fills (common on peak embarkation days), an overflow lot with free shuttle service is used. The port has Statue of Liberty views from the terminal and parking areas.
What to do if your flight is delayed
Call your cruise line immediately. Cape Liberty is close enough to EWR that even a 2-hour delay is usually recoverable. From JFK, delays are riskier due to the longer and less predictable drive. Keep your booking confirmation number on your phone.
Pro tips
- Stay in Jersey City the night before. Hotels in Jersey City are 10 to 15 minutes from Cape Liberty, significantly cheaper than Manhattan hotels, and eliminate same-day flight risk. The Exchange Place PATH station area has several modern hotel options.
- Avoid JFK if possible. The time and cost difference between EWR and JFK for this specific transfer is large enough to justify rebooking if your schedule allows.
- Traffic timing matters. If arriving same-day, avoid the NJ Turnpike during morning rush (7 to 9:30 AM). A late-morning arrival after 10 AM usually means lighter traffic.
- The parking garage fills up. Arrive early if you are driving. Overflow lot shuttle service works, but parking in the main garage is faster.
