A beach vacation looks simple until you are standing in front of your suitcase the night before. The reality is that the beach itself is the easy part. What trips most people up is the sunburn after one careless afternoon, the sand that gets into every device, and the clothes that are somehow always damp. The packing list for a beach trip is less about the beach and more about everything you need to come back from it comfortably.

Climate and conditions

Expect hot days, warm humid nights, and strong UV regardless of season. Tropical beach destinations have a wet season with brief but heavy afternoon rain. Mediterranean beach destinations are hot and dry from June through September and mild the rest of the year. Hawaiian and Caribbean islands stay warm year-round with a hurricane season from June through November worth checking.

Essential packing tips

• Reef-safe high-SPF sunscreen — your skin will thank you and several beach destinations now legally require it.
• Two swimsuits minimum so one can dry while you wear the other. Quick-dry fabric is non-negotiable.
• A rash guard or UPF shirt for long days in the water, especially for kids and anyone who burns fast.
• Flip-flops plus one pair of closed-toe shoes — the second pair is for when sand-hot concrete or unexpected rain shows up.
• A dry bag or zip pouch for phone and passport at the beach. Sand and salt water ruin electronics faster than you think.
• A wide-brim hat and real polarized sunglasses. Cheap sunglasses without UV coating are worse than no sunglasses.
