City Break Packing List
Short urban trips, packed right.
30 destinations covered
A city break is typically three or four nights with a packed itinerary of walking, eating, and looking at things. The packing challenge is fitting everything in a carry-on and still showing up at a restaurant or museum looking like you meant to be there. The answer is not more clothes. It is better choices.
Climate and conditions
Most city break destinations sit in temperate zones with real four seasons. Check the forecast for your specific travel dates rather than the monthly average, and always assume you will be outdoors in whatever weather shows up. A rainy day in Paris still means a full day of walking if you planned one.
Essential packing tips
- Comfortable walking shoes that look like actual shoes, not obvious athletic sneakers. Aim for 15,000 steps a day.
- A compact day bag with a secure zipper. Pickpocketing is real in every popular European city break destination.
- One outfit that works for a nicer dinner without needing ironing — merino or wrinkle-resistant synthetics save space.
- A packable rain shell. Umbrellas are fine but a shell keeps your hands free in crowds.
- Layers over bulk. A light sweater plus a shell beats one heavy coat almost everywhere.
- A small power bank since you will be navigating, photographing, and translating on your phone all day.
